Owligarchy
We are so lucky to have such a mix of nice people in our social stream at the owlbox. Watching the interactions inspired a bit of sociological comparison of the stages in owlbox-watching.
It goes something like this.....
New Owler: "I'm glad I didn't see the rabbit incident."
MOD-in-training: "Is there a video of the rabbit incident?"
Original MOD: "Here's the tinyurl of the rabbit incident.
It's also an embed video in my blog right under
a poem I wrote called 'Ode to the Easter Bunny.'"
okay - now must sleep

*McGree delivered large fat rat at 1:15 am PDT(approx). Molly hopped up grabbed it out of his beak, hopped back on the owlets.

Welcome Jody!
Welcome to the world Jody. Molly is the best mom you could ever want & McGee the best dad. Carlos & Donna Royal are true Angels and I thank them from the bottom of my heart. Both of these clutches/broods have been such a gift. My life has been made better because of this. Thank you all! I love being MOD!
Molly & McGee Treat Report Aug 13 / 14
*Could only stay awake (without having seen a treat) until 2-ish eastern time so didn't see either of the treats from last night, reported by others.
*One mouse was delivered at around 4 am PDT, and one rat was delivered at around 7 am PDT
*Mouse appears to have been fed to babies immediately.
*No information about how much of rat is left in pantry.
I will update as I find better information. Happy 30th Anniversary Mr. & Mrs. Inch!

*McGee arrived at 11:01 pm with a mouse, and the mouse was accepted (but McGee was not); gobbled by owlets.
*McGee arrived 4:20 am with large rat or possum. No cuddles.

Hey owlers! I am trying to do a little statistical analysis (I swear, I am qualified, certified, degree-i-fied) to compare food deliveries from last clutch to this clutch, comparing the expected size difference in clutch (6 versus 4) and change in weather (warmer).I still need the food treat data for the night of Aug 6/7 and Aug 7/8. If you have it, could you pass along in the comments section? Thanks! Here a picture of cuteness for your time and trouble.

Molly Treat Report for Aug 8 / 9
**DISCLAIMER: THIS IS THE INFORMATION I HAVE GATHERED INFORMALLY, AND IT MAY CONTAIN ERRORS, WHICH I WILL CORRECT LATER IN THE DAY, AS WARRANTED.**
*McGee visited for bonding around 10:00 pm PDT but was SOUNDLY rejected, more vigorously than the last time, at the door.
*Two owls were seen flying by immediately before the arrival of McGee.
*Some think it was not McGee but some other unknown owl in the box. No confirmation either way on this, but video of fight is available. 8/8/10 11:21 pm recording below stream, about 5 minutes in.
*One gopher/mouse and one large rat were delivered early this morning by McGee; one treat delivered at 5:05 am PDT.
*Ashely and Carrie both doing fine; Ashley said to be particularly loud.
*Both owlets have been fed; there is food in pantry
*Some have heard irregular pip peeping since early morning.

*McGee showed up for bonding date at exactly 8:30 pm PDT
*Sources indicate that there was a second date sometime during the night.
*This morning, 2 large treats were delivered in a very short period of time; 1 rat, 1 rabbit.
*Most of it is still in pantry, but she did have breakfast this morning.

Molly Treat Report for August 2 / 3
*McGee arrived and canoodled with Molly around 8:30 PDT - no treat.
*Delivered treat and more bonding at around 10:15 - large rat, possibly not dead. Molly held onto it with talons for a while then set it down and went back on eggs.
*Lens of camera got fogged or smudged or got something stuck on it when McGee left.
*Delivery of possum around 4:30 am PDT (no info on grosknufflen)

I had to see it for myself, so I looked it up and here are some pictures of the special "comb" that barn owls (and a few other birds) have that allow special preening of the feathers in the facial disk.

NOTE: They are taping THIS MORNING, even though it is nightly news.

Molly Treat Report for August 1/ 2
McGee brought a large rat or possum at 1:41am PDT, they bonded, but he seemed to be squishing her, had his foot pressing her wing out, and she threw him off after a few seconds.
I believe, based on my sources, that this was the only food drop last night. There was a bonding event that took place around 11pm, without treat.
As always, please take these notes with a grain of salt, because I don't stay up all night!

OWL EXPERIENCE
Silent hunter of the night,
Oh so elegant in flight.
Reaper of the mole and mouse,

Molly Treat Report for July 31 / August 1
*At 11 pm PDT, McGee arrived, without treat, wanted to bond. Molly came off eggs, jumped to door, and "confronted" McGee - screeching, biting, and hitting him with her wings - and pushed him out the door. Did not allow bonding. Quite violent. McGee left quickly.
*Three treats were delivered after that.
*First was a large rat, around midnight. Molly accepted rat and bonding. Ate rat right away.
*Second - not observed but reliable sources say McGee brought a treat and then took it away (rejected?)
*Third, sometime between 5 and 6 am, stored in pantry at that time.
